Experiences of the workplace: creative careers

Thursday 28 January 2027, 9.30am–2.30pm

Queen’s Hall Arts, Hexham

Northumberland Cultural Education Partnership (NCEP) is hosting an interactive creative careers event at Queen’s Hall Arts, thanks to funding from the North East Mayoral Strategic Authority.

Small groups of Year 9 and Year 10 pupils from across Northumberland will take part in a range of workshops designed to inspire them to explore the variety of careers available within the creative and cultural sectors.

Pupils will take part in four 45-minute hands-on workshops, offering an introduction to different roles and pathways within the creative industries. Across the day, they will explore workshops such as gallery curation, filmmaking, art installation and technical lighting and sound for the stage.

The event will conclude with a Q&A panel, giving young people the opportunity to hear directly from industry professionals and ask their own questions about routes into creative careers.

What can we expect to take part in?

Filmmaking: Telling Stories on Screen

A fast-paced, hands-on introduction to filmmaking. Participants will explore how scenes are built, try out real camera and sound equipment, and work together to create a short sequence. We’ll break down the filmmaking process – from directing and camera work to performance and shot choices – giving students a taste of how screen stories come to life.

Workshop delivered by Addison Keen, Filmmaker, Youth Arts Facilitator & Charity Trustee

What does an Art Curator do?

This workshop introduces students to what contemporary art curators do and why the role matters today. It combines a brief explanation of core curatorial tasks with a hands-on activity in which students select artworks and create their own exhibition theme. By the end, participants understand that curating is a creative, idea-driven career open to anyone curious about art and the world around them.
